What Top Performers Do Differently
Most students prepare well. What separates a confident performance from an anxious one usually has nothing to do with math ability — and everything to do with what happens in the 18 hours before the test begins.
Students who perform at their best on competition day share a few consistent habits.
They arrive rested
A full night of sleep improves processing speed, recall, and emotional steadiness under pressure.
They sit down calm
A relaxed brain works faster than a tense one. Calm isn't passive — it's a competitive advantage.
They stay in the game
They don't let one hard question shake the rest of their paper. Steadiness is a skill, not a trait.
None of that is talent. All of it is preparation.
The Night Before: A Simple Checklist
✂ Print this. Put it on the fridge.-
Sleep on time — no exceptionsA tired brain makes avoidable mistakes. No amount of last-minute review compensates for poor sleep. Aim for a full night.
-
Stop studying by 8pmIf your child doesn't know it tonight, cramming won't help. What will help is arriving sharp. Close the books early.
-
Confirm your test setup tonightLog in to the test portal and confirm everything works — browser, login credentials, audio if needed. Do this tonight, not five minutes before the test.
-
Set out everything you'll needScratch paper, pencil, eraser, water. Have it ready on the desk. Remove the friction before the day begins.
-
Have a calm conversationTell your child you're proud of the work they've put in. That's it. No pressure, no pep talks about scores. Just calm confidence.
Test Day: The Hour Before
The morning routine matters more than most parents realize. These six habits take five minutes to set up and make a measurable difference.
Eat something light and real
Avoid heavy meals or sugary cereals. Eggs, toast, fruit — light and stable. Keep a glass of water nearby during the test.
Use the restroom beforehand
Simple. Easy to forget. Do it before sitting down for the test.
Join the session early
Don't log in at the last second. Joining a few minutes early removes last-minute stress and allows a moment to settle.
Set up in a clean, quiet space
Clear the desk. Reduce clutter. Let your child sit where they feel focused — not the kitchen during breakfast chaos.
No last-minute coaching
Resist the urge to run through problems before the test. It increases anxiety. Trust the preparation that's already done.
Three slow breaths before starting
Have your child take three slow, deliberate breaths before the timer starts. It works.
How to Approach the Paper
These principles apply to Math Kangaroo and every competition your child will ever take. Share them the night before — not the morning of.
How Parents Can Help on Test Day
This section is for you — not your child. Your energy sets the tone for the entire morning.
Keep the morning calm
If you're anxious, your child will feel it. A relaxed, confident household on test morning is one of the best things you can give them.
Handle logistics, not pressure
Your job today: breakfast ready, space set up, login confirmed, water on the desk. That's real support. Leave the performance to them.
Avoid score pressure
Don't say "you have to win." Say: "I'm proud of you for doing this. Go do your best." That's it. Pressure narrows thinking — confidence expands it.
Lead with curiosity after the test
Ask what the questions were like. Show genuine interest in the experience before asking about the outcome. It tells your child you value growth, not just scores.
Remember: effort and courage deserve recognition
Sitting down for a challenging math competition takes real courage. Whatever the result, that deserves acknowledgment — before the score, not after.
"We've had students walk into Math Kangaroo anxious and underprepared — not in math, but in mindset. The ones who trained consistently, and whose parents kept things calm on test day, almost always came out proud of their performance regardless of their score. That confidence compounds. It shows up again at AMC, at Math League, at every competition after."
After the Test: What Comes Next
A single test result — good or bad — tells you very little about a child's mathematical potential. What actually predicts long-term competition success is different.
Consistent exposure to challenging problems over months — not weeks
Deep conceptual understanding, not just formula memorization
Mathematical thinking developed through structured, year-round training
Students who go on to perform strongly in AMC, Math League, MOEMS, and state-level competitions almost always share one thing: they trained year-round, not just before test season.
If your child enjoyed Math Kangaroo — or if they found it harder than expected and want to do better next time — the answer is the same: structured, ongoing Olympiad training.
