What Is the AIME Competition?
AIME is an advanced mathematics examination designed for students who qualify through the American Mathematics Competitions pathway. It challenges students to solve difficult problems and enter precise numerical answers.
A Step Beyond the AMC
The American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) is an invitational competition that follows the AMC 10 or AMC 12. Students qualify based on their performance in the corresponding AMC competition.
Unlike the AMC, where students select answers from multiple choices, AIME asks students to produce a three-digit integer answer. This requires students to solve each problem and determine the exact numerical result.
AIME problems are designed to test deeper mathematical insight, strategic thinking, and the ability to work through challenging problems independently.
What Makes AIME Different?
No Multiple-Choice Answers
Students must solve the problem and enter the numerical answer rather than selecting from five choices.
15 Challenging Problems
The examination consists of 15 problems that require students to apply mathematical concepts in creative and non-routine ways.
Three-Hour Examination
Students have three hours to work through the problems, making strategic time management an important part of AIME preparation.
Deeper Mathematical Reasoning
AIME requires students to go beyond routine calculations and use creative approaches, logical deductions, and strong mathematical intuition.
AIME is about depth, not speed alone. Students need a strong mathematical foundation, but success also depends on recognizing patterns, choosing effective strategies, and persisting through challenging problems.
AIME Past Papers & Practice Resources
Prepare for the AIME mathematics competition with past papers and practice resources. Working through previous AIME problems can help students strengthen mathematical reasoning, develop problem-solving strategies, improve precision, and become more confident when solving challenging competition-style questions.

How Does the AIME Work?
AIME has a very different format from the AMC. Instead of choosing from multiple-choice answers, students must solve each problem and enter a three-digit numerical answer.
Numerical Answers, Not Multiple Choice
Each AIME problem requires a numerical answer. Students must enter an integer from 000 through 999 based on the exact answer to the problem.
AIME Scoring
AIME scoring is straightforward: students receive one point for every problem they answer correctly. There is no penalty for incorrect answers.
The key to AIME is depth of problem solving. With only 15 problems and three hours available, students have time to explore difficult ideas, but they must also decide how to allocate their time effectively across the exam.

What Topics Are Covered in AIME?
AIME problems draw on core areas of high-school mathematics while requiring students to combine concepts and discover creative solution strategies. Strong preparation focuses on both mathematical knowledge and advanced problem-solving ability.
Algebra
AIME algebra problems can involve equations, functions, polynomials, sequences, inequalities, and algebraic manipulation.
Number Theory
Students encounter problems involving integers, divisibility, primes, modular arithmetic, and numerical patterns.
Geometry
Geometry questions may require students to connect geometric properties with algebraic or trigonometric reasoning.
Combinatorics
Counting problems challenge students to find systematic ways to count arrangements, selections, and possible configurations.
Probability
Probability problems require careful analysis of possible outcomes and often combine counting with logical reasoning.
Advanced Problem Solving
Many AIME problems are designed around an insight rather than a single formula, requiring students to connect multiple mathematical ideas.
Skills Strong AIME Students Develop
AIME preparation is about more than covering mathematical topics. Students need to develop habits that help them approach unfamiliar and challenging problems effectively.
AIME rewards students who can think deeply. Building a strong foundation in mathematics is essential, but students also need repeated exposure to non-routine problems to develop the flexibility and confidence required for advanced competition mathematics.
Know the Important Dates
AIME participation is based on qualification through the American Mathematics Competitions pathway. Students should complete the AMC qualification process and confirm their AIME participation details through their school or authorized test administrator.
AMC Qualification
Students must first participate in the appropriate AMC examination and meet the qualification requirements for AIME.
AIME Participation Registration
Qualified students should confirm their AIME participation and registration arrangements with their school or authorized competition administrator.
AIME I Examination
AIME I is one of the two standard AIME examination administrations offered during the competition season.
AIME II Examination
AIME II provides an additional examination administration for eligible students during the same competition season.
Important: AIME dates, qualification rules, and registration procedures can change from one competition year to another. Parents and students should verify the current year's information with the official AMC/AIME administrator before registering.
