What Is the Purple Comet! Math Meet?
The Purple Comet! Math Meet is an international mathematics competition designed around collaborative problem solving. Unlike many individual math competitions, students participate as a team and work together to solve a set of challenging mathematics problems.
How the Competition Works
Purple Comet! Math Meet uses a team-based format in which students discuss mathematical problems, develop solution strategies, and work collaboratively to reach their answers. The competition emphasizes mathematical thinking and teamwork rather than simply completing routine classroom exercises.
Who Can Participate?
Purple Comet! Math Meet is intended for middle school and high school students. Students participate in teams according to the competition's eligibility and team requirements for the applicable contest year.
What Mathematics Is Tested?
Problems can require logical reasoning, algebraic thinking, geometry, number theory, combinatorics, patterns, counting, probability, and creative problem-solving. The difficulty is intended to encourage students to think beyond standard classroom methods.

Topics Covered in Purple Comet! Math Meet
Purple Comet problems can draw from a broad range of mathematics. Students should be prepared to apply mathematical concepts, logical reasoning, and creative problem-solving rather than rely only on routine formulas and procedures.
Number Theory
Integers, divisibility, factors, multiples, prime numbers, remainders, ratios, numerical patterns, and properties of numbers.
Algebra
Algebraic expressions, equations, sequences, relationships, inequalities, variables, and mathematical patterns requiring logical manipulation.
Geometry
Angles, triangles, polygons, circles, areas, perimeters, coordinate geometry, geometric relationships, and spatial reasoning.
Combinatorics & Counting
Counting techniques, arrangements, selections, combinations, patterns, cases, and problems that require systematic organization of possibilities.
Probability
Basic probability, counting-based probability, outcomes, events, and logical analysis of possible results in mathematical situations.
Logic & Mathematical Reasoning
Deduction, logical relationships, patterns, strategy, estimation, critical thinking, and unfamiliar problems that require students to construct an effective solution.
Important: Purple Comet! Math Meet does not follow a traditional classroom syllabus with a fixed list of questions. Problems can combine concepts from different areas of mathematics and may require creative approaches, logical reasoning, and teamwork. Students should use the official contest information and previous problems to understand the expected level and style of questions.
Purple Comet! Math Meet Registration Dates
Purple Comet! Math Meet is an annual online mathematics competition. Registration is handled by an adult team supervisor, who creates teams and selects a convenient time for each team to compete during the official contest window.
How Registration Works
An adult supervisor must register through the official Purple Comet! Math Meet website. After registering, the supervisor can create and register student teams. Each team can have one to six students.
When Do Teams Compete?
Purple Comet provides a multi-day competition window rather than requiring every team to compete at one fixed time. The team supervisor selects a convenient start time during the official contest period.
Important for the 2027 competition: The official website currently lists the next Purple Comet! Math Meet for April 6–15, 2027. The official rules state that team registration begins February 1 and continues through the end of the competition. Parents and supervisors should check the official Purple Comet website for the final 2027 registration instructions and any schedule updates.
