What Is the USA Mathematical Olympiad?
The USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) is a prestigious proof-based mathematics competition for highly accomplished students in the United States who qualify through the MAA American Mathematics Competitions pathway.
A National Competition for Advanced Problem Solvers
The USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) challenges students to solve difficult mathematics problems that require significantly more than routine calculations. Participants must explore ideas, identify useful patterns, develop strategies, and construct rigorous mathematical arguments.
USAMO is fundamentally different from multiple-choice mathematics competitions. Students are expected to prove their solutions and communicate their reasoning clearly. A correct idea must be supported by a logically complete mathematical argument.
The competition provides an opportunity for exceptional mathematics students to experience advanced olympiad-style problem solving and to develop the depth of reasoning, creativity, persistence, and proof-writing skills associated with higher-level mathematics.
Why USAMO Matters
For Parents: USAMO goes beyond speed and computation. Students are challenged to think independently, develop sophisticated mathematical ideas, and communicate complete proofs with precision and clarity.
USAMO Past Papers & Practice Resources
Prepare for the USA Mathematical Olympiad with past papers and practice resources. Working through previous USAMO problems can help students become familiar with olympiad-level problem solving, strengthen mathematical reasoning, and develop the ability to construct rigorous mathematical proofs.

Topics Covered in USAMO
USAMO problems are drawn from the core areas of olympiad mathematics. Students are expected to combine concepts, discover patterns, develop creative strategies, and present rigorous mathematical proofs.
Number Theory
Problems involving integers and their properties, often requiring clever observations, divisibility arguments, and rigorous deductions.
Algebra
Advanced algebraic problems that require students to manipulate expressions, identify relationships, and establish mathematical inequalities and identities.
Geometry
Euclidean geometry problems that require students to recognize hidden relationships, construct useful arguments, and prove geometric results.
Combinatorics
Discrete mathematics and counting problems that challenge students to find patterns, analyze structures, and create elegant mathematical arguments.
Proof Matters: USAMO is not simply about obtaining the correct answer. Students must communicate their ideas through clear, rigorous, and logically complete mathematical proofs.
How USAMO Qualification Works
The USA Mathematical Olympiad is an invite-only, proof-based mathematics competition. Students progress through the MAA competition pathway, with AMC and AIME performance playing an important role in USAMO selection.
USAMO Qualification Pathway
Students do not register directly for USAMO in the same way they register for the AMC. Qualification follows the official MAA competition pathway, and eligible students are invited to participate.
USAMO Important Dates
USAMO follows the MAA mathematics competition pathway. Students should track AMC, AIME, invitation, and USAMO dates carefully as they prepare for the competition.
