About GiM

What Is Girls in Math at Yale?

Girls in Math at Yale (GiM) is a mathematics competition and community designed to encourage girls and young women to explore challenging mathematics, develop problem-solving skills, and connect with other students who share an interest in mathematics.

A Competition That Celebrates Mathematical Problem Solving

Girls in Math at Yale provides mathematically motivated students with an opportunity to work on challenging problems beyond routine classroom mathematics. The competition encourages creativity, logical reasoning, persistence, and confidence when approaching unfamiliar mathematical ideas.

Students can encounter problems involving areas such as algebra, geometry, combinatorics, number theory, and other mathematical topics. The experience is designed to make challenging mathematics engaging while encouraging students to develop their own problem-solving strategies.

+
Challenging Mathematics Students work through non-routine mathematical problems that require reasoning, creativity, and persistence.
+
Collaborative Experience GiM creates an environment where students can share mathematical ideas and learn alongside other motivated young mathematicians.
+
Encouraging Girls in Mathematics The competition helps girls build confidence and develop a stronger interest in advanced mathematical problem solving.

Why Students Participate in GiM

Girls in Math at Yale gives students an opportunity to challenge themselves with mathematics in a supportive environment while developing skills that extend beyond standard school coursework.

Preparing for GiM can also strengthen problem-solving abilities that are useful for other mathematics competitions, including AMC, AIME, HMMT, PUMaC, MATHCOUNTS, ARML, and other advanced mathematics contests.

Build Confidence Through Mathematics

GiM encourages students to approach difficult problems with curiosity, persistence, and confidence. Beyond competition preparation, the experience can help students develop a deeper appreciation for mathematics and encourage them to pursue future opportunities in mathematics, science, technology, engineering, and other STEM fields.

GiM Topics

Topics Covered in Girls in Math at Yale

GiM problems challenge students across several areas of mathematics, with an emphasis on creative reasoning, logical thinking, and solving unfamiliar problems. Students should be comfortable applying mathematical ideas rather than relying only on memorized formulas.

x

Algebra

Equations, inequalities, algebraic expressions, polynomials, sequences, functions, and clever algebraic manipulation may appear in challenging GiM problems.

Geometry

Students may encounter problems involving triangles, circles, angles, areas, lengths, ratios, and geometric relationships that require creative reasoning.

#

Number Theory

Divisibility, integers, prime numbers, modular arithmetic, patterns, and properties of numbers can form the basis of non-routine problem-solving questions.

C

Combinatorics

Counting, arrangements, selections, patterns, permutations, and logical casework help students develop systematic approaches to complex mathematical problems.

%

Probability

Probability and counting ideas may be combined to create problems involving games, arrangements, random processes, and logical decision-making.

Creative Problem Solving

GiM rewards students who can recognize patterns, make useful observations, try different approaches, and connect mathematical ideas to solve unfamiliar problems.

!

More Than a Standard Mathematics Syllabus

GiM is designed around mathematical problem solving rather than a simple list of classroom topics. Some problems may introduce unfamiliar ideas or require students to discover patterns and develop their own approach. Strong preparation should therefore focus on mathematical reasoning, creativity, and applying familiar concepts in new ways.
