What Math Is Covered in BrUMO?
BrUMO challenges students with olympiad-style problems across the core areas of competition mathematics.
Algebra
Equations, inequalities, polynomials, functions, and algebraic reasoning.
Geometry
Plane geometry, geometric relationships, configurations, and proof-based reasoning.
Number Theory
Divisibility, primes, modular arithmetic, and interesting properties of integers.
Combinatorics
Counting, arrangements, patterns, probability, and discrete mathematical reasoning.
Who Can Participate in BrUMO?
BrUMO is open to students through high school, including younger students who are ready for challenging competition mathematics.
Students Through Grade 12
Students in high school and below are eligible to participate in BrUMO.
Middle School Students
Advanced middle school students are welcome to participate alongside older competitors.
Students From Any School
BrUMO is not restricted to students attending Brown University or schools in Rhode Island.
Different Experience Levels Are Welcome
BrUMO offers Division A and Division B, giving students and teams an opportunity to compete at a level appropriate to their experience with math competitions.
What Happens During BrUMO?
BrUMO moves students through a mix of individual and collaborative challenges, testing different aspects of mathematical problem solving.
Individual Round
Students work independently on challenging mathematics problems and compete for individual recognition.
Team Round
Teammates collaborate to solve problems, combining their ideas and mathematical strengths.
Mystery Round
A creative challenge that asks teams to adapt to an unexpected mathematical format.
Guts Round
A fast-paced team challenge where speed, accuracy, and communication all matter.
