About HMMT

What is the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament

HMMT is one of the leading mathematics tournaments for high school students, bringing together talented problem solvers for challenging individual and team-based events.

What Is HMMT?

The Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT) is a mathematics competition designed for high school students who enjoy challenging mathematical problems. The tournament is organized by students from Harvard, MIT, and surrounding schools and attracts participants with a strong interest in mathematics.

HMMT challenges students through a combination of individual and team competitions. Rather than focusing only on routine mathematical techniques, its problems encourage participants to recognize patterns, develop creative approaches, and apply mathematical ideas in unfamiliar situations.

Depending on the tournament, students may participate in subject-focused individual tests as well as collaborative events such as the Team Round and Guts Round. This variety allows students to demonstrate both independent problem-solving ability and teamwork.

01

Advanced Problems

Problems are designed to challenge strong high school mathematics students beyond routine classroom exercises.

02

Individual Events

Students compete individually and demonstrate their mathematical knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

03

Team Events

Team-based rounds encourage students to communicate, combine ideas, and solve challenging problems together.

04

Mathematical Creativity

HMMT rewards students who can approach unfamiliar problems creatively and identify elegant mathematical solutions.

Why HMMT? HMMT gives ambitious high school mathematicians an opportunity to challenge themselves, experience olympiad-style problem solving, and collaborate with other students who share a passion for mathematics.

HMMT Mathematics Topics

Topics Covered in HMMT

HMMT problems cover a broad range of advanced high school mathematics. Students may encounter challenging problems in algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and number theory, requiring creative thinking and strong problem-solving skills.

01

Algebra

Algebra problems challenge students to manipulate expressions, discover relationships, and develop efficient solutions to unfamiliar problems.

Equations Inequalities Polynomials Sequences Functional Equations
02

Geometry

Geometry problems require students to identify hidden structures and apply geometric relationships creatively to reach rigorous solutions.

Triangles Circles Similarity Angles Coordinate Geometry
03

Number Theory

Number theory problems explore properties of integers and often require clever observations, patterns, and logical deductions.

Divisibility Prime Numbers Modular Arithmetic Diophantine Equations Integer Properties
04

Combinatorics

Combinatorics problems challenge students to count, organize, and analyze mathematical structures while discovering efficient strategies.

Counting Permutations Combinations Pigeonhole Principle Invariants Graph Theory

Beyond Routine Mathematics: HMMT problems often combine multiple concepts and require students to recognize patterns, develop original approaches, and solve unfamiliar problems efficiently.

Registration & Important Dates

HMMT Registration Dates

HMMT offers two major tournaments during the season. Students and teams must submit a separate application for each tournament they wish to attend. Review the application deadlines and confirmation dates carefully.
