What Is the MATHCOUNTS Competition?
A challenging math competition that helps middle school students strengthen mathematical reasoning, problem-solving ability, accuracy, and confidence.
More Than Just Getting the Right Answer
MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed for middle school students in Grades 6–8. Its competition series challenges students with engaging mathematical problems that require more than memorizing formulas.
Students work on problems that test their ability to think logically, recognize patterns, work efficiently, and apply mathematical concepts in unfamiliar situations.
The MATHCOUNTS Competition Journey
School Competition
Students begin their MATHCOUNTS journey through participating schools and teams.
Chapter Competition
Qualifying students compete against other students from schools in their local chapter.
State Competition
Top-performing students advance to compete against strong math students from across their state.
National Competition
The highest-performing students can progress to the national level and compete among top middle school math students in the country.
The goal isn't simply to solve more problems. It is to develop the ability to approach unfamiliar mathematical challenges with strategy, precision, and confidence.

What Happens in a MATHCOUNTS Competition?
MATHCOUNTS challenges students through different rounds, each requiring a different combination of speed, accuracy, strategy, teamwork, and mathematical reasoning.
Sprint Round
Students solve a series of mathematical problems individually. The focus is on solving accurately while working efficiently under time pressure.
Target Round
Students work through pairs of problems that focus on mathematical reasoning and strategic thinking. Students have to carefully analyze each problem before choosing an efficient approach.
Team Round
Students work together as a team to solve challenging mathematical problems. Communication, collaboration, and the ability to divide problem-solving tasks become important.
Countdown Round
Top-performing students face challenging problems in a fast-paced format. Students must think quickly, communicate their reasoning, and arrive at accurate solutions under pressure.
MATHCOUNTS Registration Dates
Planning ahead can help your student prepare for the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series without missing important registration deadlines. Here are the key dates for the 2026–2027 competition year.
School-Level Preparation
Schools typically prepare students throughout the academic year before students participate in the Chapter Competition. The School Competition is generally administered before the Chapter Competition.
National Competition
The 2027 RTX MATHCOUNTS National Competition is scheduled for May 9–10, 2027 in Washington, DC.
Important: MATHCOUNTS registration is primarily a school-based program. Eligible students whose school will not register may participate as Non-School Competitors (NSCs), subject to MATHCOUNTS eligibility requirements and registration rules.
