Mathematics That Makes Students Think
MOEMS stands for Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools. It is designed to encourage students to enjoy mathematics while developing their ability to solve challenging, non-routine problems.
Instead of focusing only on routine calculations, Math Olympiads problems encourage students to look for patterns, make connections, test strategies, and explain their mathematical thinking.

How Does the MOEMS Competition Work?
MOEMS is designed around short, challenging problem-solving sessions that encourage students to think carefully, work independently, and develop effective mathematical strategies.
Five Problems. Five Opportunities to Think.
During each contest, students work on five mathematical problems. The problems are designed to encourage reasoning, creativity, and persistence rather than simply testing routine computation.
Receive the Problems
Students receive a set of five problems designed specifically for the MOEMS competition. Each problem presents a different mathematical challenge.
Think & Solve
Students analyze each problem, explore possible approaches, and work toward a solution. The emphasis is on thoughtful problem solving rather than guessing.
Build Across Multiple Contests
MOEMS provides multiple contests during the Olympiad season, giving students repeated opportunities to practice mathematical reasoning and improve their problem-solving skills.
MOEMS is about the process, not just the answer. Students are encouraged to develop persistence and discover different ways to approach mathematical problems that may not have an obvious solution.
What Topics Does MOEMS Test?
MOEMS problems can combine several areas of mathematics. Students need more than topic knowledge — they need to recognize relationships, choose strategies, and apply mathematical ideas to unfamiliar situations.
Arithmetic & Number Sense
Problems involving numbers, operations, fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, and numerical relationships.
Algebraic Thinking
Students use patterns, relationships, unknowns, and mathematical expressions to discover solutions.
Geometry & Measurement
Problems can involve shapes, dimensions, area, perimeter, angles, spatial relationships, and measurement.
Counting & Combinatorics
Students explore organized ways to count possibilities and identify patterns without relying on trial and error.
Probability & Data
Problems may ask students to reason about chance, outcomes, data, and numerical information.
Logic & Strategic Thinking
Many problems require students to identify clues, eliminate possibilities, recognize patterns, and build a logical path to the answer.

MOEMS problems are not limited to one mathematical topic. A single problem can require students to combine number sense, geometry, algebraic reasoning, logical thinking, and creative problem-solving. This is why practicing unfamiliar problems is an important part of competition preparation.

How Does MOEMS Registration Work?
MOEMS participation is organized through eligible schools, homeschool programs, institutes, districts, and other educational organizations. Students generally participate as members of a registered MOEMS team.
Registration Through a Team
MOEMS is primarily a team-based mathematics competition. Students normally do not register individually for the Olympiad. Participation is organized through a school, homeschool, institute, district, or another eligible educational program.
A participating organization registers for the MOEMS program and forms a team of eligible students. The team then takes the five MOEMS contests during the official administration windows.
Schools and organizations that are new to MOEMS can use the new enrollment process, while returning organizations can use the appropriate re-enrollment process.
