About USAJMO

What Is the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad?

USAJMO is a prestigious proof-based mathematics competition that gives qualifying young mathematicians an opportunity to demonstrate advanced problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and proof-writing skills.

A Gateway to Olympiad-Level Mathematics

The USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO) is designed for high-achieving mathematics students who are ready to move beyond routine competition questions and explore deeper mathematical ideas.

Unlike competitions that primarily require students to select an answer or calculate a numerical result, USAJMO focuses on proof and mathematical communication. Students are expected to develop logical arguments and clearly explain why their solutions are correct.

The competition provides an opportunity for talented younger students to experience the style of mathematics associated with higher-level mathematical olympiads and to develop skills that can support continued study in advanced mathematics.

Why USAJMO Matters

1
Proof-Based Mathematics Students learn to construct rigorous mathematical arguments rather than relying only on final answers.
2
Creative Problem Solving Challenging problems encourage students to discover original approaches and mathematical ideas.
3
Logical Reasoning Students strengthen their ability to analyze conditions, make deductions, and build complete arguments.
4
Advanced Mathematical Thinking USAJMO introduces students to deeper mathematical problem-solving beyond the standard school curriculum.

For Parents: USAJMO is not simply about solving difficult problems. It helps students develop the ability to think deeply, communicate mathematical ideas clearly, and justify their reasoning with rigorous proofs.

USAJMO Mathematics Topics

Topics Covered in USAJMO

USAJMO problems draw on fundamental areas of mathematics and require students to combine concepts, discover patterns, develop strategies, and write rigorous mathematical proofs.

01

Number Theory

Problems involving integers, divisibility, modular arithmetic, prime numbers, and number-theoretic structures.

Divisibility Primes Modular Arithmetic Diophantine Equations
02

Algebra

Algebraic reasoning problems that require students to identify relationships, establish identities, and construct elegant arguments.

Equations Inequalities Polynomials Sequences
03

Geometry

Euclidean geometry problems involving configurations, relationships, constructions, and rigorous geometric proofs.

Triangles Circles Angles Similarity Area
04

Combinatorics

Counting and discrete mathematics problems that require careful case analysis, patterns, and creative reasoning.

Counting Combinations Permutations Pigeonhole Principle Invariants

Important: USAJMO is proof-based, so knowing a formula or obtaining the correct numerical result is not enough. Students must be able to explain their reasoning and present logically complete mathematical arguments.

USAJMO Registration & Important Dates

USAJMO Registration & Competition Dates

USAJMO is an invitation-only competition. Students do not register directly for the olympiad in advance. Eligible students first compete in the MAA AMC and AIME pathway and, if selected, receive an invitation to participate in USAJMO.

Important: USAJMO is an invite-only, proof-based competition. For the 2026–27 cycle, MAA lists the USAJMO competition for March 20–21, 2027. Qualifying students will be invited to register at an official competition site after AIME scoring is complete.

01
AMC 10 / AMC 12
November 5 & 13, 2026
Students begin the MAA competition pathway through the AMC 10 or AMC 12.
02
AIME
February 5–6, 2027
Eligible students who qualify through the AMC can participate in the AIME during this competition window.
03
USAJMO
March 20–21, 2027
The USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad is scheduled to take place over two competition days.

How Students Reach USAJMO

STEP 01
Take AMC 10 Students participate in the MAA AMC pathway.
STEP 02
Qualify for AIME Students meeting the applicable AIME qualification requirements are invited to participate.
STEP 03
Perform at AIME AIME performance is used as part of the selection process for the national olympiads.
STEP 04
Receive USAJMO Invitation Selected students receive an invitation and register at an official competition site.

Note: MAA competition dates, eligibility requirements, qualification criteria, and administration procedures may change. Students and parents should check the official MAA information for the current competition cycle.
