About USAMO

What Is the USA Mathematical Olympiad?

The USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) is a prestigious proof-based mathematics competition for highly accomplished students in the United States who qualify through the MAA American Mathematics Competitions pathway.

A National Competition for Advanced Problem Solvers

The USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) challenges students to solve difficult mathematics problems that require significantly more than routine calculations. Participants must explore ideas, identify useful patterns, develop strategies, and construct rigorous mathematical arguments.

USAMO is fundamentally different from multiple-choice mathematics competitions. Students are expected to prove their solutions and communicate their reasoning clearly. A correct idea must be supported by a logically complete mathematical argument.

The competition provides an opportunity for exceptional mathematics students to experience advanced olympiad-style problem solving and to develop the depth of reasoning, creativity, persistence, and proof-writing skills associated with higher-level mathematics.

Why USAMO Matters

1
Proof-Based Problem Solving Students must construct rigorous proofs rather than simply provide numerical answers.
2
Deep Mathematical Reasoning Problems require students to connect ideas, analyze conditions, and develop multi-step arguments.
3
Creativity & Insight Students are encouraged to discover elegant and creative approaches to challenging problems.
4
Olympiad-Level Mathematics USAMO provides qualifying students with experience solving problems at the highest levels of mathematical competition in the United States.

For Parents: USAMO goes beyond speed and computation. Students are challenged to think independently, develop sophisticated mathematical ideas, and communicate complete proofs with precision and clarity.

USAMO Mathematics Topics

Topics Covered in USAMO

USAMO problems are drawn from the core areas of olympiad mathematics. Students are expected to combine concepts, discover patterns, develop creative strategies, and present rigorous mathematical proofs.

01

Number Theory

Problems involving integers and their properties, often requiring clever observations, divisibility arguments, and rigorous deductions.

Divisibility Prime Numbers Modular Arithmetic Diophantine Equations Integer Properties
02

Algebra

Advanced algebraic problems that require students to manipulate expressions, identify relationships, and establish mathematical inequalities and identities.

Equations Inequalities Polynomials Functional Equations Sequences
03

Geometry

Euclidean geometry problems that require students to recognize hidden relationships, construct useful arguments, and prove geometric results.

Triangles Circles Angles Similarity Congruence Area & Length
04

Combinatorics

Discrete mathematics and counting problems that challenge students to find patterns, analyze structures, and create elegant mathematical arguments.

Counting Permutations Combinations Pigeonhole Principle Invariants Graph Theory

Proof Matters: USAMO is not simply about obtaining the correct answer. Students must communicate their ideas through clear, rigorous, and logically complete mathematical proofs.

USAMO Qualification

How USAMO Qualification Works

The USA Mathematical Olympiad is an invite-only, proof-based mathematics competition. Students progress through the MAA competition pathway, with AMC and AIME performance playing an important role in USAMO selection.

USAMO Qualification Pathway

1
Participate in AMC Students begin the MAA American Mathematics Competitions pathway by participating in the appropriate AMC competition.
2
Qualify for AIME High-performing students in AMC 10 or AMC 12 may qualify for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination.
3
Perform Strongly on AIME AIME performance contributes to the selection process for students who may be invited to the national mathematical olympiads.
4
Receive a USAMO Invitation Students who meet the applicable qualification requirements receive an invitation and information about participating in USAMO.
5
Compete in USAMO Invited students participate in the two-day, proof-based USA Mathematical Olympiad.
USAMO Is an Invite-Only Competition

Students do not register directly for USAMO in the same way they register for the AMC. Qualification follows the official MAA competition pathway, and eligible students are invited to participate.

USAMO Schedule

USAMO Important Dates

USAMO follows the MAA mathematics competition pathway. Students should track AMC, AIME, invitation, and USAMO dates carefully as they prepare for the competition.

Important Dates

AMC
AMC 10 / AMC 12 Students begin the MAA competition pathway through the AMC examinations.
AIME
AIME — February 5 or 6, 2027 Qualifying students take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination.
